Bird of Paradise was designated as the first Official Los Angeles City Floral Emblem in 1952. It was imported from South Africa. There are many flowers that naturally grow here in Los Angeles and better support our local wildlife and ecosystems. This Listening Project is an effort to see if it is time to replace our Official City Flower with a native local LA species that we choose together.

Why?
Preserving Indigenous flora and fauna is important.
There are approximately 2,600 species of plants native to Los Angeles County.
Native plants support our record 518 local birds, the most native bird species of any county in the US.
Native flowers support hundreds of native bees that make Los Angeles home.
Native flowers support migratory birds and butterflies on their journey.
Native plants help manage urban stormwater runoff and mitigate urban heat.
Native plants are important for our artistic culture.
Native flowers are beloved by people on streets throughout our communities.
Let's connect -- Indigenous peoples, biologists, artists and anthropologists, local neighborhoods... what other flowers need to be added to the list?
